Year 5 Classes
“Since 1988, our unique syllabus has helped over six thousand children enter secondary school, feeling confident on solid foundations.”
-
Ten children per class, maximum.
One hour long.
Subjects rotate weekly between Maths and English.
Assessments are informal and include a warm-up session at the beginning of each class where material from previous weeks is revised.
In Maths, topics are developed in line with those covered in the 11 plus such as ratio, probability and problem-solving.
In English, we explore varying styles of extended writing with significant attention placed on enhancing children’s technical skills in spelling, punctuation and grammar.
As there is no verbal reasoning in this course, the children have more time to complete the Maths and English syllabus in class, at a slower pace. This enables children to gain confidence without feeling the pressure of a highly competitive environment.
Homework is an important part of our year 5 course. Some children will have more than others as it often comprises the completion of what was set in class. It enables our tutors to monitor progress on a weekly basis and it allows children to consolidate the skills and knowledge that they have learned, as independent learners at home.
If a child is identified as needing a greater challenge in work, then they may be advised to move into one of our 11 plus core groups, where they will be in a slightly faster-paced, more competitive environment. They will also start to study Verbal Reasoning.
Books are always sent home so that parents can monitor their child’s own progress. We encourage all parents to do this!

Subjects rotate weekly between Maths, English and Reasoning.
Recommended for anyone taking the 11+ or entrance exams.
Assessments are both formal and informal and include a warm-up session at the beginning of each class where material from previous weeks is revised.
In Maths, topics are developed in line with the topics covered in the 11 plus such as ratio, probability and problem-solving.
In English, we study comprehension of fictional and non fictional texts. We also explore varying styles of extended writing with significant attention to enhancing children’s technical skills whilst writing in flow, as well as learning the technical terminology of the language.
Reasoning classes cover both verbal and non verbal types in alternating weeks. Children taking the Medway test may find these classes cover enough material for the third paper in the exam but may wish to join Core Plus lessons to get a more thorough understanding.

Classes alternate between SPaG (spelling punctuation and grammar) and Verbal Reasoning one week and Non-Verbal Reasoning the next.
Recommended for children taking the Kent test who will need to have equal abilities in all subjects to pass the paper.
Also recommended for any children taking the Medway test who would like extra practice in these trickier subjects as there will only be a limited amount of the core classes dedicated to Reasoning.
SPaG and Verbal Reasoning have been combined in this class to give children a comprehensive understanding of the English language from technical terminology to correct use of SPaG and understanding of common sounds, meanings and patterns.
Non Verbal Reasoning comes more naturally to some than others but it is a skill that can be honed and in turn will help the brain to create new pathways to problem solving. This is a great skill to have in life, not just for passing exams!
