Year 5 Classes

“Since 1988, our unique syllabus has helped thousands of children enter secondary school, feeling confident, on solid foundations.”

    • Classes are 2 hours long.

    • Subjects rotate weekly between English & Verbal Reasoning the first week and Maths & NVR the second.

    • Recommended for anyone taking the Medway 11+, Kent 11+ or private and selective entrance exams.

    • Assessments are both formal and informal throughout the year.

    • In English, we study comprehension of fictional and non fictional texts. Technical skills in spelling punctuation and grammar are practiced in both question form and during various extended writing tasks.

    • Verbal Reasoning classes cover a huge range of verbal reasoning questions to give children maximum exposure to the sort of questions they may face. This topic also helps improve English technical skills.

    • In Maths, topics are developed in line with those covered in the 11 plus such as ratio, probability and problem-solving.

    • NVR - stands for non verbal reasoning where logic must be applied to various shapes and patterns using skills such as comparing, counting, flipping, rotating, folding, using the mind’s eye and process of elimination.

    • Homework is an important part of our year 5 course. Some children will have more than others as it often comprises the completion of what was set in class. It enables our tutors to monitor progress on a weekly basis and it allows children to consolidate the skills and knowledge that they have learned, as independent learners at home.

    • Revision and practice tests are available through the later part of the year.

    • One hour long.

    • Recommended for any children who may struggle with the basics and would like extra time to go over topics covered in the main 11 plus classes.
